Obituary

Heino, Walter E. "Walt" age 99 of Champlin passed away March 2, 2023. Walt is survived by his sons Grant (Candy) and Craig (Dawn); grandchildren Megan (Mat), Brent, Cameron (Hannah), Josie and Lena; great-grandchildren Quinlan, Anneli and Everett; other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores, his second wife, Edna and his youngest son, Gordon. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday March 11, 2023 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 700 Western Street, Anoka with visitation 45 minutes prior. Lunch and fellowship will follow the service. Walt was born in Eveleth, Minnesota to Alma and Waino Heino on November 4, 1923. He grew up and went to school in Eveleth, Minnesota. When he was a young man, he worked in the iron ore mines for Oliver Mining Company in Virginia, Minnesota. Walt was a veteran of World War II and served in both the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy. Following his service in the military, he married Dolores Larson on December 28, 1946 in Eveleth. Walt worked at Northwestern Bell Phone Company for 36 years. Dolores passed away after Walt's retirement, and he later married Edna Helmstetter in 1986. Walt loved working with his hands. He attended Dunwoody College. His labor of love was the family cabin on Lake Pokegama which he almost single-handedly built himself, including a traditional Finnish sauna. He was the family expert at lawn jarts and horseshoes when he wasn't in the fishing boat. Walt was proud of his Finnish heritage and made several trips throughout his life to visit relatives in Finland. He greatly enjoyed traveling, camping with his family when his sons were young, and was an avid golfer.
