IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Veronica
Messer
November 9, 1932 – August 14, 2024
Veronica Messer, of Anoka, Minnesota passed away August 14, 2024, in her home surrounded by family. Veronica (Olheiser) Messer was born on November 9, 1932, in New England, ND to Joseph and Eugenia Olheiser. There she was raised on the farm along with her 7 siblings. She attended St. Pius School in Sheffield until the eighth grade. Her desire to become a nun led her to St. Benedict's Convent in St. Joseph, MN, where she attended for one year, then moved back to Dickinson. She later worked at the Dickinson Hospital as a housekeeper. After leaving the hospital, she worked at St. Benedict's Nursing Home until she married Kasper Messer on September 29,1953 at St. Pius Catholic Church in Sheffield, ND. Together they began raising their family. In 1965 they moved to Little Falls, MN, where she spent the next 10 years. There she had a huge garden, selling cucumbers by the bushel for pickling. In between loads and loads of laundry, she filled the kitchen table with homemade donuts and bread, various baked goods and jams, as well as freezing and canning to prepare for the winter months. Her German potato salad and creamed chicken were the best! In 1976 her family moved to Anoka, MN, where she lived for 48 years. She worked at Twin Rivers Nursing Home for 32 years before retiring. After retirement, she enjoyed her daily rosary, word find, solitaire on her "computer", writing letters, playing dice, watching Wheel of Fortune and Polka Spotlight, eating Pepsi floats, and visiting with family and friends. Her annual Halloween celebrations with her legendary vegetable soup always brought lots of joy. One of her favorite things to do in the wintertime was burning wood in her "she shed". This was her sanctuary. She loved to stoke the fire, reminisce about the "old times", and spend hours praying to the Lord. In all her years of sacrifice and faithful dedication to her family, she was always humble, never wanting credit for all that she had accomplished. She had a very strong and loyal faith in God that never wavered. Veronica was a great listener and very slow-to-speak. She was a gentle soul and had a very kind heart, always wanting the best for others. What a great example for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, who love and miss her dearly, but also know that she is at peace. Preceded in death by husband Kasper, infant son Adam, grandsons Benjamin Stewart & Daniel Nierenhausen, infant grandson Chance Messer, siblings John, Mike, Nick, Otillia, Agnes, Rose & Leo, infant siblings Adam, Anna, Agnes & Pauline. Survived by children, Lucy, Marjean (Bill), John (Pat), Doug (Cindy), Hank, Roger, Elaine (David), Mell (Jaci), Dorene, Kasper, Jr. (Julie), Randy (Jane), Donalda, Patricia, Eric & Mark, 25 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends. Visitation Thursday, 5-8 pm at Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, 2005 Branch Avenue, Anoka, and also one hour prior to Mass at the church. Memorials preferred.
