Goodell, Robert D. 'Bob'age 68 of Coon Rapids, passed away March 7, 2016 with his family by his side after a long battle with colon cancer.
Bob was raised in Spearfish, SD and moved to Mpls in 1970. He graduated from Yankton College in Yankton, SD with a degree in music and taught at the Columbia Heights Middle School before heading to Northwestern University in Chicago where he earned his Masters of Music in piano performance. A passionate musician, he was more passionate about the law. Bob attended the University of Minnesota Law School and graduated with honors in 1977.
He is remembered as one of Minnesota's preeminent prosecutors who received numerous lifetime achievement awards for his commitment to public service and work with crime victims. He was a nationally known ethics lecturer and taught prosecutors not only in Minnesota, but at the National Advocacy Center where his legacy is wide spread. He was a fearless advocate for abused children and helped draft and pass legislation that helped define standards under which perpetrators of violence could be held accountable. His prosecutorial career spanned well over 120 jury trials and 50 appeals at both the state and federal level. He is also noted for his early work in the Public Defenders Office and as private defense counsel where he successfully convinced the Minnesota Supreme Court to overturn the conviction of Roger Caldwell in one of Minnesota's most notorious murder cases.
Bob served and chaired the Crimes Victims Reparations Board, taught CLE and trail advocacy at both Hamline and William Mitchell Law School. He continued througout his life to study piano and hosted and performed numerous piano recitals.
Following his retirement in December of 2014 he traveled the world with friends and saw his daughter graduate from college.
He is survived by his wife, Renee Brown; daughter, Madeline Goodell; sister, Mary Jo Goodell; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Winfield Bowe Goodell, mother, Loretta Nikont Goodell; and half brother, Winfield Frank Goodell.
Services will be held Friday, March 18 at Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka, MN. Visitation 2 PM followed by the funeral at 3 PM with a celebration held afterwards. Bob will be interred in Spearfish, SD at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Minnesota Public Radio are preferred.
