Obituary

Richard Peter Sorteberg, age 92, died July 24, 2022, after injuries due to a fall. His unexpected passing follows the March 22 death of his spouse Carolyn Sorteberg and his son Gregory Sorteberg on February 24. Dick was born April 29, 1930, in Anoka to parents Peter and Ida Sorteberg. He was the youngest of seven children and all his siblings have pre-deceased him. His brothers and sisters are Leland (Meryle) Sorteberg, Elaine (Russ) Farrell, Marilyn (Don) Clark, Dorothy (Art) Downing, Allen (Elaine) Sorteberg, and Marge (Alexei) Portnoff. He is survived by his six remaining children Corrin Sorteberg, LeAnn (Frank) Simpson, Scott Sorteberg, Peter (Lisa) Sorteberg, Karen Sorteberg, and Paul (Kris) Sorteberg. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren Christine, Andy, Ashley, Matt, Jake, Emma, Tricia, and Alex; and four great-grandchildren Isaac, Ben, Kennedy, and Linden. Richard also had dozens of nieces and nephews that he cared about. His dog Sierra and Carolyn's cat Ozzie were also part of his very large family. A long-time friendship with Duane Dingman continues to this day. On the first day of school in 4th grade, Duane asked if he could sit next to him on the bus. Dick slid over without hesitation and the rest is history.
He graduated from Anoka High in 1948 where he played sports and made many friends. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and traveled on his motorcycle to Riverside, California, where he was stationed at the time he and Carolyn were married on January 26, 1952. It should be noted that even though they had seven children in ten years with birthdates, the only date he could recall without pausing was their wedding date. Dick and Carolyn spent over 70 years together. He worked hard his whole life providing for his family and finished out his career at age 55 with the Anoka County Sheriff's Office as an investigator. Dick and Carolyn then moved to a small hobby farm outside of Verndale, MN, where they began their first retirement. In 1993, they literally sold the farm and down-sized their lives by becoming full-time RVers to start their second retirement. Hitting the open road with a big red truck was the adventure he had always been seeking. In 2003, they moved back to Anoka and settled just a few blocks where they raised their active family. That would be their third and final retirement.
The Sorteberg children are extremely grateful to cherished next-door neighbors Steve and Linda Sexton, and Donna Dahlheimer, for watching out for their parents as they aged. To say they went way beyond what is expected, would be an understatement.
A small graveside service for Richard will be held Tuesday August 2. Visitation and gathering will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home in Anoka. Interment will be at 11:30 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery where he will be buried next to his loving wife Carolyn and his fourth child Gregory. There will be committal prayers and a military farewell for Richard but no reception after. The Haven for Heroes in Anoka, a home for displaced veterans, www.haven4heroesmn. org would appreciate any contributions in his memory.
