Obituary

Randy Allen Kolb was born October 6, 1952 in Rapid City, SD to Ted and Pat (O'Rourke) Kolb.  He grew up in the Bison, SD area, mainly on the family ranch, doing the things most country kids do.  He was very active in 4-H and excelled in the sheep and range management projects.

Randy attended all twelve years of school at Bison where he participated in athletics, music, oral interpretation and school plays, graduating with the class of 1970.  He continued his education at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, SD, attending classes during the school year and working for Grand Electric Cooperative in both Bison and Buffalo, SD during the summer months.  Randy graduated from Black Hills State with a degree in education and political science in 1974 and began his career as a teacher.

On May 18, 1974, Randy was united in marriage to Darlene Davis in Spearfish, SD. The couple taught school in McIntosh, SD and Polo, SD. They were blessed with a son Christopher in 1977.  That same year Randy obtained a masters degree in education administration from Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD.  Randy and Darlene later divorced and Randy continued teaching and also worked in the furniture business.  He was married to Katherine Nelson on June 9, 1979 in Anoka, MN.  Randy and Kathy taught at several schools in South Dakota and Nebraska. In the summer months when he wasn't busy with administrative duties, Randy would work for area farmers and ranchers. A son Jeffery joined them in 1984. In 1988 the couple moved to the Anoka, MN area, later settling in Blaine, MN.  Kathy continued to teach and Randy worked at various jobs both in and out of the education field. Daughter Julianna was born in 1989. An avid history buff, Randy helped both Jeff and Julianna with history day projects which earned them trips to the national contest in Washington DC.  He also was always making sure both kids got to all school events! He always said " My dad did it for me I will do it for my kids!". Randy had many interests, a lifelong Republican, he served as a delegate to both the South Dakota state Republican convention and the Minnesota Republican caucuses, and he also served on the Blaine City Council. He loved to talk sports especially when his favorite teams the Yankees and the Packers were winning and would start an argument just for the sake of arguing.  Semi retired he was currently studying to become a phlebotomist. He also did volunteer work for his church and for the YMCA. The one place you could always find Randy though is outside in the garage smoking his pipe, reading the paper, doing a crossword or reading a book. He would read for hours! The one thing he loved most though was taking mini car rides with wife Kathy all over Minnesota.

Randy passed away unexpectedly April 7, 2016 at his home in Blaine, MN.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine, Blaine, MN; his sons, Chris (Marnie) Telkamp, Centennial, CO, and Jeff Kolb; his daughter Julianna Kolb, Blaine, MN; grandson, Brock Telkamp; brother, Shane (Angie) Kolb, Meadow, SD; sister-in-law, Marlette (Ken) Hoxmeier, Vadnais Heights,  MN; nephews, Justin and Wil Kolb, and Nick (Rose) and Joe Hoxmeier; grandniece, Allison Hoxmeier; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
