After returning from Japan in 1946 he met Bev Hastings of Anoka, married her in June 1948 and had four children in five years. He soon entered a fuel oil and gasoline business known as Local Oil Co., first partnering with Cully Carlson, later with Warren Blair and then with sons Greg and Gary.
