Karna L.
& Siegfred J. Brewer
April 4, 2025
Karna Lizbeth Cronholm Brewer was born April 29, 1937 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Olive Ruth and Lloyd Bengt Cronholm. The family moved to Northfield, Minnesota when she was 7 years old. Karna graduated from Northfield Junior Senior High School in 1955, then graduated Mankato Teachers College with a degree in Elementary Education in 1959. Karna taught in the Minnesota school system for 29 years, including Anoka schools, where she retired. Karna was active in REAM - Retired Educator's Association of Minnesota - and served as Vice-President and Recording Secretary. She also joined Toastmasters International, and held many offices in local politics, including District Chairman, Precinct Captain, and Election Judge. She served on the Anoka Planning Commission for 26 years until recently. In her leisure time, she sewed theatrical costumes and sang in the First Congregational Church choir until shortly before her death. Karna loved birdwatching, embroidery, reading mystery books, and was particularly well known for sending cards for birthdays and other occasions that included long letters of questions and advice, or "epistles." Siegfried John Brewer was born February 27, 1943 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia to Peter and Teresa Gombotz. At age 7 he was brought to the United States by Catholic Charities. He was adopted in Davenport, Iowa, attended Davenport High School, community college and served in the United States Army. Karna and Siegfred Brewer married on April 28, 1991. Together they continued to actively volunteer for organizations such as Meals on Wheels and Food Shelf, called bingo at senior retirement homes, and served First Congregational Church in many ways. Karna and Siegfred traveled to visit family and friends, regularly played cards, gardened, and loved going to markets and fairs. They enjoyed time at their French Lake cabin where Karna filled the bird feeders while Sieg "fished." Karna and Sieg both died on April 4, 2025 within hours of each other. After declining health with metastatic cancer, Karna suffered a stroke and passed away. Siegfred died from cardiac arrest with a thoracic aortic aneurysm. Karna is preceded in death by her parents, brother John Cronholm and his wife Carla, brother-in-law Benjamin Darby, and niece Cathryn Darby Currier. She is survived by her sister Peggy Darby, Brenda Eckert (niece), Cara Cronholm (niece), Marta Cronholm Runnels (niece), Robert Cronholm (nephew), and many great nieces and great nephews.
