Survived by wife, Sue, of 44 years; children, Chris (Rick) Valento of Duluth, Lissa (Tim) Lerum of Mpls; sisters, Bettalina (Danny) McCarter of TN, Jeanette (John) Clemmerson of AZ; sister-in-law, Judy (Mike) Sikorra of Deephaven; nephews, Rob McCarter of NC and Ben McCarter of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Isabel, Finley and Cole; grand nephews, Shiloh and Gavin; grand niece, Addie Mae; various branches of car enthusiasts and many special friends of The Guild of Metalsmiths. Joe worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 40 years, often telling colorful stories of derailments and mayhem. Joe retired 8 years ago and discovered his true calling of being an amazing metal sculptor, painter and all-around passionate artist. He loved to create alien creatures from found objects, as well as flowers. Joe was the happy collector of many things, including sports cards, TV antennas, office chairs and toy cars. A gathering of family & friends will be held from 1-3 PM at Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, 2005 Branch Ave., Anoka, MN on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, with a service at 3 PM. We would also like to give a very special thanks to the nurses and doctors of North Memorial Hospital, and especially to hospice care nurse, Joann and social worker, Wayne.
