Obituary

James L. Green, age 85, of Andover, Minnesota, passed away on January 20, 2025.

Born on April 7, 1939, James Green began life on his family's farm in Tracy, Minnesota. Jim was
the second child of the late Wilfrid and Augusta Green, being the younger brother of Leah
Chuba, and older brother of Marjorie Pfeifer, Donald Green and the late Mary Catherine
Waclawik and Rose Gilbert. While growing up in southern Minnesota farm country, Jim played
on his school's baseball team and as a young man was a member of a traveling choir, putting his
excellent singing voice to good use. Jim later studied architectural drafting at North Dakota
State College of Science, and that is when he met a dark-haired northern Minnesota beauty
named Kathy through a fortunate mishap. He and Kathryn Svenneby married in 1963, and
didn't leave each other's sides for the next 60+ years. Their daughters Julie came along in 1964,
Roxanne in 1965, and Angela in 1982. Shortly after Jim completed the NDSCS drafting program,
he realized it just wasn't for him. Someone advised him that he should look into these new
things called "computers," and told him that IBM made these contraptions. He went to IBM's
office in Minneapolis and asked what he would need to do to get a job working on computers.
He followed their advice regarding the technical training he would need, then returned to the
same office a few years later, and was promptly hired. He spent his entire career working on
computers, through their evolution from a single computer that could take up an entire large
room and ran on punch cards, through the computer-based panic leading up to Y2K. Jim retired
in 2004.

Jim had a myriad of interests outside of work. He loved building and fixing things, being skilled
in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and pretty much anything he turned his hand to. He
was always quick to offer assistance to anyone who needed help with construction or home
projects. He also loved the outdoors, including golfing, fishing, and canoeing. When he and
Kathy built their home in Andover, he insisted that no more trees be cut down than was
absolutely necessary. As a result, the family had a home in the woods, and they often joked
that Jim liked to talk to his trees. Jim was also deeply devoted to St. Patrick's Catholic Church,
serving as lay eucharistic minister and usher for services for many years. He also performed
volunteer work for the church while it was being constructed, including helping to build the
church's main outdoor Celtic cross that was seen through the windows behind the altar, and
served as an all-around "fix-it" person for the church every week for years following his
retirement. Jim was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years, regularly
assisting with their charitable fundraising efforts and community programs.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Wilfrid and Augusta Green; his sister Mary Catherine and her husband Gary; his sister Rose; his brother-in-law George Chuba; and his niece LeaSvenneby. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; his daughter Julie Perrine and grandchildren, Leah and Andrew, of Minneapolis, MN; his daughter Roxanne Rothschild (Bryan) of Falls Church, VA; his daughter Angela Green of Andover, MN; his sisters Leah Chuba of Maple Grove, MN, and Marjorie Pfeifer (James) of Apache Junction, AZ; his brother Donald Green (Beverly) of Ham Lake, MN; his brother-in-law Larry Gilbert of Las Vegas, NV; and extended family and friends too numerous to mention.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Thurston
Lindberg Deshaw Funeral Home, 13817 Jay Street NW, Andover. A wake will be held on Friday,
January 31, 2025, at 10:00 am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 11921 Nightingale Street NW,
Oak Grove, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 am.

Jim may be gone, but because of his friendly nature, willingness to help others, and "can do"
attitude, we know that he left the world a better place than he found it. Jim loved to joke and
laugh, and in all our memories he is smiling and saying something funny. We miss you already
and will love you forever.
