Obituary

Barthold, Jacob M. "Jack" Age 90, a Ham Lake resident for 78 years. Jack passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his children on December 11th, 2016. He was dedicated to the service of his family, church, community, and country. From a young age, he showed his entrepreneurial spirit by growing and selling popcorn to the Anoka movie theatre and for two-bits a week starting the daily woodstove for his one-room-schoolhouse. He served in the US Army in the 216th Chemical CORP for two years, during which he participated in nuclear bomb testing and witnessed 7 nuclear detonations. After being honorably discharged, Jack returned to Ham Lake to start a family. It was during these years that he truly became a "jack-of-all-trades," working as a mechanical engineer at Minneapolis Electric Steel for 42 years, pouring cement, hauling pigs, building 9 homes for his family and friends, and remaining an avid gardener his entire life. He was also a respected representative of the City of Ham Lake for over 50 years, serving as charter commission member, council member, and planning and zoning commission member. He supported Epiphany Catholic Church of Coon Rapids as benefactor and usher for over 45 years. He had a quick smile, sharp wit, and loved his family. He will be sorely missed. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Mary Ann Barthold; loving spouse, Therese; siblings, George, Stephen, Mary "Marie" Gangl, Elizabeth Regman, Nicholas, Frances Reichart, Albert, and Agnes Herem. He is survived by his sister, Anne (Eldon) Hentges; his children, Jane Procopio of Ramsey, Michael (Nancy) Barthold of Brooklyn Center, Jake (Theresa) Barthold of Ham Lake, Susan (Christopher) Zeece of Cedar, Sally (Richard) Karlen of Roseville, Peter (Joann) Barthold of St Francis, Paul (Diana) Barthold of Andover; 32 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Epiphany Catholic Church, 11001 Hanson Blvd. NW, Coon Rapids. Interment St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lino Lakes. Visitation Friday 5-8 PM at Thurston-DeShaw Funeral Home, 13817 Jay St. NW, Andover, and also one hour prior to Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
