Hal was raised on a farm. His first jobs were at the Land-O-Lakes Bull Farm and the Anoka
Dairy. On September 15, 1953 he was drafted into the army. He spent the first sixteen weeks
doing basic infantry training at Fort Riley, Kansas. Then he came home for seven days, got
married, had a short honeymoon and then went back to Fort Riley for eight weeks of
leadership training. He was transferred to Japan where he was a member of the Regimental
Honor Guard and a member of the Regimental Drill Team. He spent many hours training and
performing as a member of the Drill Team. Hal came home from the Army on September 14,
1955.
He started work at Hoffman Engineering (now nVent) where he spent two years in the factory
as a machine operator. While working in the factory, he took drafting classes at the University
of Minnesota and was promoted to the engineering department. Two years later, he was
promoted again to the quotation department where, as a quotation analyst, he calculated
pricing for Hoffman's custom products. Shortly after his arrival in the quotation department he
was promoted to department supervisor. He continued in that capacity for over 20 years. At
age 51 he was promoted to Sales Service Manager. In 1989, at age 56 and after 34 years with
the company, he retired from Hoffman Engineering.
In his post-Hoffman years, Hal spent some time as a courier driver and performed volunteer
work in the community: CAER food shelf in Elk River, Meals on Wheels, the Elk River Senior
Center and Zion Lutheran Church. During this time, he also became a care giver for his wife,
Mildred. She required a considerable amount of care, and this was difficult for Hal, but he
never quit caring for her until she passed in 2017.
For fun, Hal enjoyed roller skating, bowling and snowmobiling. He was an accomplished trap
shooter breaking 100 clay targets in a row on more than one occasion. His favorite activity
though was pheasant hunting with his beloved Dutchess. She was a golden retriever he
trained, and they spent many hours in western Minnesota and surrounding states hunting for
pheasants.
There will be a memorial service for Hal on Friday, December 13th at 11:00am at Zion Lutheran
Church, 1601 4 th Avenue South in Anoka. Visitation begins at 10:00am.
