Metcalf (nee Magnusson), Constance J. "Connie" age 94 of Fridley. Connie was born Sept. 30, 1924 to John and Margaret (nee Bersell) Magnusson in Rock Island, Ill. and passed away Sept. 8, 2019 at home after a bout with cancer. Connie was a passionate musician, environmentalist and humanist. She was very involved in social action and an avid recycler. Her father was a chemistry professor and she got her degree in chemistry and taught piano at Augustana college. Worked in pharmaceutical lab in Berkeley 1 1/2 years. University of Minnesota master of arts in music 1952. Employed at U of M KUOM radio station. Taught public school music, Chatfield MN. Married Robert Metcalf September 1956 and had 3 children. Footlighters theater group early 60s. Directed 2 mother singer groups — Chicago and won first place. Charter member League of Women Voters 1960, served as president. Tour guide Walker Art Center 18 years. Sang and accompanied choir at First Unitarian Society 10 years under Tom Nee. Charter member MSUS Fridley 1960. Pioneer of recycling in Fridley. Set up recycling center for residents after survey. Received accommodation/award from city. Initiated several social action programs at MSUS. Delivered Meals on Wheels. Highway cleanup 3 years. Started playing violin at the age of 69. Joined N.E. Orchestra in 2009 and played tennis until age 91. She is preceded in death by husband, Bob. Survived by children, Kam Metcalf, Peter and Laren (Kim) Metcalf; grandchildren, Michael, Briana (Luke) Fernandez, Megan and Matthew; great-granddaughter, Sophia; many other loving family and friends. Memorial service Saturday (9/14/2019) 11 AM at Michael Servetus Unitarian Society, 6565 Oakley Drive NE, Fridley. Visitation 1 hour prior to service. Private interment Mound Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the American Humanist Association, Common Cause, League of Conservation Voters or Minnesota Lakes and Rivers Association.
