Obituary

Beverly Marlene (Johnson) Fraser, 88, of Blaine, Minnesota, met Jesus when He called her name on December 16, 2025. She was born on September 8, 1937, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the oldest of two daughters born to Alvin Berto Johnson and Helga Lorencee (Hjelmstad) Johnson. Her father affectionately called her “Beebs” a nickname she later immortalized on her license plate. After graduating from Reynolds High School in 1955, Beverly moved to Washington D.C., where she worked as a secretary for the Department of the Navy and fell in love with cherry blossom season.

On December 29, 1957, Beverly married James Henry Fraser of Thompson, ND. They shared 57 years of marriage and built a life rooted in family, service, and community. Jim’s railroad career brought their family from North Dakota to Minnesota, where they lived in Hibbing, Blaine, and Duluth before ultimately settling in Blaine. A devoted wife, Beverly lovingly cared for Jim during the five years following his stoke until his passing in 2015. Bev and Jim also shared a love for travel that carried them around the world, creating cherished memories that spanned continents. Beverly’s final journey, a pilgrimage to Israel in 2019 at the age of 82, was a spiritual highlight.

A meticulous and hardworking firstborn, Beverly spent years working as a bookkeeper for Alvin’s Service Station and the Reynolds Grain Elevator in ND before later joining Socon Construction in Minneapolis. Known for her perfectionism and strong work ethic, she balanced manual books down to the penny—old school, by hand. Though never a fan of computers, Beverly learned to use an iPad after retiring to download knitting patterns and check emails. Her 100% Norwegian heritage was an important and treasured part of her identity.

Beverly was rarely idle. Even while watching Jeopardy! or her favorite true crime shows, her hands were busy knitting or crocheting baby blankets, sweaters, and prayer shawls, all while answering questions or solving mysteries from her chair. As a committed believer in Jesus, Beverly found deep friendship and purpose at Zion Lutheran Church where she served on the altar guild, assisted with funerals, helped with their annual “Super Sale” rummage sale, and attended numerous Bible studies. A gifted seamstress, she also led the Ladies’ Quilting Group for a time. Stacks of cut fabric squares, ready to be sewn into quilts, were a constant presence on her dining table.

Beverly loved to bake and generously shared her homemade treats, especially at Christmas. Tins overflowed with krumkake, sandbakkels, rosettes, fudge, and an impressive assortment of cookies, all shared with family and friends. Her caramel rolls were a family favorite and her peanut butter balls were legendary, appearing at every grandchild’s graduation and wedding reception. Thoughtful to the core, Beverly kept Hallmark in business, making sure cards were perfectly timed for the special days of those she loved. Though she possessed many talents, she downplayed most, preferring to serve quietly in the background without seeking attention. Her life was a collection of small, faithful acts that added up to something beautiful and extraordinary.

Beverly will be forever missed by her children: Denise (Daniel) Hammond of Cloquet, MN; Lynn Harrie of Fargo, ND; Jim (Terra) Fraser of Andover, MN; Brenda (Bob) Niemann of Andover, MN; and Beth (Kevin) Flindall of Victoria, MN. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Fabian of Mesa, AZ; sister-in-law Dolores Brown of Melbourne, FL; 17 grandchildren: Heather (Jed) Frederick, Ryan (Brandi) Hammond, Andrea (Michael) Porta, Leah Hammond, Deborah (Dustin) Hjelle, Hannah (Jonah) Parrott, Rebecca, Rachel (Jordon) Peil, and Nathan Hammond, Marc (Amanda) Harrie, Jeff and Nick Harrie, Garrett and Lindsey Fraser, Steven and Michael Niemann, and Alex Flindall; and 22 great-grandchildren: Ezra, Ezekiel, Eva, and Elia Frederick; Brielle, Asher, Evelyn, and Cole Hammond; Judah, Simeon, Rueben, and Talia Porta; Allison Hammond; Isla, Xander, Kallyn, and Torrin Hjelle; Henry and Lars Parrott; Kalio Yadi; Grant and Sidney Harrie. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James, her sister-in-law Shirley Fields, and brothers-in-law Roy Fields, Joe Brown, and Bob Fabian.

Beverly will be remembered for her devotion to family, her generosity, quiet strength, and the thoughtful ways she brightened the lives of those around her—one quilt, one cookie, one perfectly timed card at a time.
