Wahlert
February 3, 1939 – March 17, 2026
Bernard “Bernie” Wahlert, beloved husband of Grace Wahlert, was born on February 2, 1939, and was raised in Luverne, Minnesota. He was the son of Theodore (“Ted”) and Meta (Hemme) Wahlert. Bernie graduated from high school in Luverne. On March 5, 1957, Bernie was drafted into the United States Marine Corps and served his country honorably until his discharge on November 28, 1958. Following his military service, Bernie began a career in cross-country trucking. He was first united in marriage to Gladys (Pesek) Thompson and through this union became a father to Laura, Audrey, and Rhonda. On July 19, 1964, Bernie married Grace Lossing, with whom he shared 62 years of love, partnership, and family life. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Gail. In his younger years, Bernie enjoyed snowmobiling trips, traveling, and camping. He later drove the show truck for Toro for many years before working at the University of Minnesota as a janitor, where he took great pleasure in attending university sporting events. In addition, he operated a catering business on the side called “Three and a Half Men,” referring to himself as “the half.” After retirement, Bernie and Grace spent winters in Texas, where they became part of the community at Palm Shadows. Bernie was affectionately known as “the Mayor” and was well known for leading the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. He enjoyed many gatherings, including deck parties, dances, and community festivities, and cherished the friendships he built there. Bernie is survived by his daughter Audrey Wahlert; grandsons Brandon and Daniel (Fiancé Glenda Schluter); and great-grandchildren Brea (Fiancé Reece Janisch) Bailey, and Avery, nieces and nephews, along with many friends and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Grace Wahlert; daughters Laura, Rhonda, and Gail; his parents, Theodore and Meta Wahlert; his brother Alvin Wahlert; his sister Iona Hartog; and his brother-in-law Albert Hartog.
