Oftedahl, Alfred Jimmy "Jim" age 84 of Andover passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June18. Jim was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He recalled hopping the streetcar to get to school at Morgan Park High School. He entered the Navy at age 17 during the Korean War. After boot camp in San Diego, he was stationed on the USS Mountrail, an Attack Troupe Transporter, and later on the Destroyers USS Mansfield and the USS Maddox. After serving in the Navy Jim graduated from college at Moorhead State University, where he met his beloved wife Marian of 59 years. His first teaching job was in Warren, MN. When Coon Rapids Senior High School first opened, in 1964 Jim was part of a group of teachers that would remain friends for the rest of his life. He became the Head Librarian at CRSH and retired after 31 years. Jim was an avid traveler and loved to coach and play sports such as baseball, softball, golf and tennis. Traveling the world with Marian they managed to visit all seven continents on their many adventures. He was a man of many talents, always into something especially with friends and family, going on trips, fishing, coaching, playing sports, bridge club, doing construction, and visiting people. He will be remembered for his ability to make people smile, always joking around and having a tender heart. He is preceded in death by parents Alf and Edna; siblings Gay and Ed. Survived by loving wife Marian; daughters Kiz (Jeff) Taylor, Kim Oftedahl (Jim Christophe) and Jill (Ron) Smothers; grandchildren Amelia, Zackary, Jimmy, Tyler (Allisyn) and Jacob (Amber); great grandchildren Lauren and Calvin. Visitation Wednesday (6/26/2019) 5:00-8:00 PM at Thurston-DeShaw Funeral Home, 13817 Jay St. NW, Andover. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to CRHS Scholarship Fund.
