IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alex Fred
Herman Schumacher
July 23, 1925 – June 2, 2025
Alex Herman Fred Schumacher, 99, of Andover, Minnesota, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 1, 2025, at Arbor Oaks Senior Living.
Alex was born on July 23, 1925, to Berthold and Emma (Borchardt) Schumacher. As a proud World War II veteran, Alex served his country with honor and pride before returning home to build a life rooted in hard work, ingenuity, and dedication to his community. On February 15, 1949, he married his beloved wife, Helen and the two truly became one for the next 76 years. After their wedding, he worked at the B&O railroad in Ohio for two years before returning to New Germany, Minnesota, to run a dairy farm. They farmed together for over 25 years, where the farm was truly his home. In retirement, Alex pursued his second career as a horologist, meticulously crafting clocks at Kuempel Chime.
One of Alex's greatest joys was when he and Helen adopted their son, Dale, in 1959. Alex was always involved in Dale's education, serving as a school board member and attending his many cross country and track events. The three of them also took many road trips around the country, where Alex especially enjoyed the time driving. He and Dale loved fishing -in open water and on the ice- always hoping for sunfish.
In his later years, Alex enjoyed spending time with his wife, Helen, whether it be doing their regular lunch outings, playing cards, or watching sports from their living room. In the early 2000s when Dale married Debbie, Alex began a new adventure as a father-in-law and grandpa. He cherished his role as a grandfather to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing games and attending their many concerts, games, and recitals throughout the years. When not spending time with his grandchildren, Alex could often be found working in his garage or tackling projects around the house. Armed with a roll of duct tape and a tube of Goop, there was hardly anything he could not repurpose or repair.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 76 years, Helen Lucille Schumacher; his son Dale (Debbie) Schumacher; his granddaughters Kristin (Erik) Wendlandt, Samantha (Tony) Martinson, and Brie Hawkins (Noel Geiger); his great-grandchildren Niklaas & Eliza Wendlandt and William Martinson; his sister-in-law Opal Schumacher; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Alex was preceded in death by his parents, sister Glenna (Pete) Schmidt, brother Ruben Schumacher, and his baby sister Lacorda Schumacher.
Alex was deeply loved, and he will be deeply missed—his warmth, laughter, and love will echo in the hearts of all who knew him throughout his nearly century-long journey.
A visitation with family and friends will take place at 9:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service to honor and celebrate Alex's life at 10:30 a.m. on June 12, 2025, at Family of Christ Church, 16345 Polk St NE, Ham Lake, MN 55304, with lunch to follow.
